Crossing The Street

"I felt like I was disappearing every time I crossed the street" - Holden Caulfield "Catcher in the Rye"

Footsteps laughing at their own irony
Going nowhere with impatience of a child
Waiting to grow
Forgetting that time takes its own pace

And before you know it
We all have crossed the streets
Watching headlights and taillights
Fall behind us like the seasons we have all forgotten

The pavement acts like a drawing board
For every step we take
In our own direction
And soon enough the pavement is covered
With interlinked-separate paths
By people too ignorant to notice
Anyone else walking beside them

The sidewalk feels like the finish line
Or the starting gate
Depending on which way you cross
And intersections feel like heartache
Dead ends are eternal

One way streets are hard to come by
It's challenging to pass on a one lane road
And unfortunately, there are no traffic cops
Willing to pull you over for moving to fast.
